Basic English term length (2012 and onward)

Currently, our Basic English classes are 10 weeks long and meet for six hours per week. If we simply make the term longer and still meet for six hours per week, we will need to increase the price by 60%, which will make the courses less attractive.

I believe a better option for Basic English will be to have two eight-week terms in each of the full semesters and one eight-week term in the summer. This way we will still be able to keep in close alignment with the regular college calendar but still have shorter terms that will be more manageable for the students.

Our calendar for Autumn 2012 through Autumn 2013 will look like this:

Autumn 2012:
  • Autumn 2012-A: Wednesday, Aug. 29 - Sunday, Oct. 21
  • BREAK: Week of Oct. 22
  • Autumn 2012-B: Monday, Oct. 29 - Sunday, Dec. 23
Spring 2013:
  • Spring 2013-A: Monday, Jan. 14 - Sunday, March 9
  • BREAK: Week of March 10
  • Spring 2013-B: Monday, March 17 - Sunday, May 12
Summer 2013:
  • Summer 2013: Monday, May 20 - Sunday, July 14
Autumn 2013:
  • Autumn 2013-A: Wednesday, Aug. 21 - Sunday, Oct. 13
  • BREAK: Week of Oct. 14
  • Autumn 2013-B: Monday, Oct. 21 - Sunday, Dec. 15
That will give us five terms of eight weeks each per year.
