DRAFT - New curriculum for semesters

Here you will find the DRAFT of the curriculum beginning in Autumn of 2012, when the College moves to semesters.

Each Basic English course will be 8 weeks in length, with 2 courses per semester.

We will need to expand the upper range of our offerings in order to encompass the learning outcomes covered in the current ESL097 course, which will go away as of Autumn of 2012.

Note: Basic Somali and Basic French courses will follow the same basic structure and learning outcomes as Basic Spanish.

Please review this DRAFT and let me know your thoughts. Thank you for your help!

Areas of curriculum

There are a lot of areas of curriculum in Basic English to be considered, and most of these have very important sub-areas:

  • Grammar
  • Spelling
  • Sentence types
  • Reading
  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Handwriting
  • Vocabulary
  • Life skills
  • American culture
  • Work culture
  • School culture
  • Basic paragraphs
  • Computer skills
  • Editing
  • Punctuation
I'm sure I'm missing some. Can you think of any?

Milestones and timeline

Here is the breakdown as I see it of the tasks we will need to accomplish and the estimated completion dates for each area before the changeover to semesters in August 2012. Please consider this a living document; changes will be made whenever appropriate.

1. Determine length and dates of terms for 2012 - 2013. [Done] [Estimated time required: 2 hours]

2. Curriculum review: [Estimated completion date: December 2010] [Estimated time required: 36 hours]
  • List and order all areas of core Basic English curriculum (series of BE1 through BE7 ... and beyond, as needed). What do we want the students to know when they complete the Basic English series? In what order should these items be introduced?
  • Add learning outcomes for current ESL 097 class, as that will be eliminated in the transition to semesters.
  • Create learning objectives and desired outcomes for new eight-week classes in the core series. (Keep in mind that items that are introduced in one course will need to be reinforced in future courses.)
  • List and order all areas of current additional Basic English courses: Basic Communication 1 and 2, Basic Reading 1 and 2, Basic English for Health Care, Basic English for Business, Introduction to Computers.
  • Create learning objectives and desired outcomes for new eight-week classes in the additional classes.
3. Determine new instructional materials (textbooks, etc.) to accomplish the objectives in the new curriculum at each level. This will involve a thorough search of current materials in the field to find what will best fit our needs. [Estimated completion date: June 2011] [Estimated time required: 16 hours]

4. Assessment: [Estimated completion date: November 2011] [Estimated time required: 24 hours]
  • Review assessment and determine how to best assess student learning at each level.
  • Develop assessments to correspond to the new courses.
  • Develop new version of Basic English Placement Test to reflect new additional skill levels in the Basic English series.
5. Determine pricing for eight-week classes for 2012-2013. [Estimated completion date: January 2012] [Estimated time required: 1 hour]

6. Create new syllabi for each course, including text information, desired learning outcomes and assessment information. [Estimated completion date: January 2012] [Estimated time required: 6 hours]

7. Datatel system: [Estimated completion date: March 2012] [Estimated time required: 6 hours]
  • End current courses in Colleague as of August 2012.
  • Create new courses in Colleague with new numbering system.
  • Enter course descriptions that include desired learning outcomes and assessment information for each course.
  • Enter prerequisites for all new courses.
  • Set up new sections for Autumn 2012.
8. Marketing and awareness: [Estimated completion date: April 2012] [Estimated time required: 8 hours]
  • Create materials to let students and campus know about the upcoming changes.
  • Distribute materials.
  • Post on website.
  • Update website with other needed changes.
  • Create new flyers and other promotional materials reflecting new course information.
9. Update Basic English program overview book and Language Institute Employee Handbook with new course information. [Estimated completion date: May 2012] [Estimated time required: 5 hours]

10. Enter all course information in Curriculum Management Tool. [To be done on a continuing basis, as project moves along] [Estimated time required: TBD - CMT is not yet functional as of 12/10. If a spreadsheet/database must be used, estimated time required: 8 hours]

Basic English term length (2012 and onward)

Currently, our Basic English classes are 10 weeks long and meet for six hours per week. If we simply make the term longer and still meet for six hours per week, we will need to increase the price by 60%, which will make the courses less attractive.

I believe a better option for Basic English will be to have two eight-week terms in each of the full semesters and one eight-week term in the summer. This way we will still be able to keep in close alignment with the regular college calendar but still have shorter terms that will be more manageable for the students.

Our calendar for Autumn 2012 through Autumn 2013 will look like this:

Autumn 2012:
  • Autumn 2012-A: Wednesday, Aug. 29 - Sunday, Oct. 21
  • BREAK: Week of Oct. 22
  • Autumn 2012-B: Monday, Oct. 29 - Sunday, Dec. 23
Spring 2013:
  • Spring 2013-A: Monday, Jan. 14 - Sunday, March 9
  • BREAK: Week of March 10
  • Spring 2013-B: Monday, March 17 - Sunday, May 12
Summer 2013:
  • Summer 2013: Monday, May 20 - Sunday, July 14
Autumn 2013:
  • Autumn 2013-A: Wednesday, Aug. 21 - Sunday, Oct. 13
  • BREAK: Week of Oct. 14
  • Autumn 2013-B: Monday, Oct. 21 - Sunday, Dec. 15
That will give us five terms of eight weeks each per year.

Semester Conversion

In Autumn of 2012, Columbus State -- along with all other public colleges in Ohio that haven't already done so -- will change from a quarter system to a semester system. This change involves much more than just altering the calendar of classes. We will need to look at how our curriculum should be spread over the available time and how we can use this opportunity to improve our programs.

The purpose of this blog is to be sure that Basic English instructors and those interested in the program have the opportunity to stay informed and to give comments, feedback, opinions, etc. on the thought process as we move forward. Your participation is vital to a successful transition to semesters and to an even better Basic English program. I look forward to working with you on this exciting project over the next year and a half.
